- I Was Crying Uncle
The back of the book promises " . . . suspicion, betrayal, and revenge", but it turned out to be kind of a nothingburger.
- A Catholic Cult?
This book tells the true story of girl who grew up in a 1960s cult led by erstwhile priest Leonard Feeney. It's astounding how people can follow blindly without questioning at all, and lots of the members were educated at some of our most esteemed universities. Patricia recounts her journey through this time, some sweet, much tragic. Amazing.
- What Would You Do?
So sad throughout, until the final revelation. Gut-wrenching. Good writing.
- Too Bad it Wasn't a Strangler
Although this was an easy, quick read, I found the characters completely unlikeable and didn't really care what happened to any of them. One was stupid, one was evil, and one was crazy.
- Bang the Drum Faster, Mark
I know I was supposed to love this book. It was a movie, and this is the one of Mark's baseball trilogy that everybody seems to remember and laud. I just liked The Southpaw SO much better. This seemed weirdly disjointed and, despite the premise (sort of a Brian's Song type of deal), it lacked the warmth of the first in the series.
- Ugh.
This book takes us on a journey with four college buddies as they "mature" and head into "adult" life. Oh . . . my . . . gosh. I'm going to save you some trouble here. The characters are so unloveable I was rooting for them to all die. I was. This is a self-indulgent effort by a writer validating her own life choices and putting readers through it with her. It's getting 1 1/2 hos because the colors on the cover are pretty.
- Who'd a Thunk it?
This tour through North America's long line of visitors (and settlers) might surprise you. My education was certainly lacking, or it was really stellar and I forgot. Anyway, this historical travelogue of sorts will introduce you to lots of folks you never knew set foot in "our" fair country. Enlightening, fun, and sad at times. A good read.
- Kingsolver/Problem Solver
An accomplished writer sees the writing on the wall of a new, unkind, scary era and the result is this well-intentioned book. There is some good history in there as well as a run-through of kindergarten rules for being kind to your neighbor. Good try, Barbara, but as we all know, the problem is much bigger. It's UUUUUGE. And has a bad hairdo.
- Now I Can Say I've Read Shakespeare, Sorta
This is a great (as if I know--ha!) reinterpretation of a classic. Through sanguine and savage playground dynamics, you'll find yourself wondering which of these characters you would identify with, especially at that time in history. Thought-provoking.
- ARRRR You Jolly Roger Ready?
This book was interesting, mainly (in my opinion) for the information on pirates! I learned a lot about the frilly-dressed set and was quite surprised as my suppositions were dashed, one after another. In regard to the actual hunt for the pirate ship, I probably won't be quitting my day job. That sounds like 98.2% slog and whatever the rest is thrill. Plus, you know, sharks.
- Ah, Dementia
Well-written, but ultimately so sad! The curtains are going down on poor Maud but even so, she realizes that her friend Elizabeth has gone missing, and is striving to find her. It felt a little too much like a preview for me.
- But I Sure Was!
This creepy, bleak and sad novel will have you looking at shattered childhood ideals through the eyes of nine-year-old Michele. You can feel the Italian summer through the bottoms of your feet--you're there. A good writer.
