- E.L.O.'s "Too Much Time on My Hands" comes to mind
Having just read the bio of the Mitfords, I was eager to read Nancy's supposed magnum opus. Opuses. Opossums. Whatever the word, I'm thinking the times, the social limitations and Nancy's narrow world view made for rather humdrum material. Oh, she was a good writer, and for that she gets some credit. And I get credit for donating a book.
- Maybe the Inspiration for Wonder Woman?
This is a true story of a teacher in Alaska in 1927. Keep in mind that she was all of 19 years old. This book has it all--adventure, romance, comedy and suspense. What a woman--she's my hero!
- A Thoughtful Story
This book really resonates in this day and age, and especially with chasms deepening between north and south, blue and red. Silas House's brush paints his characters with respect, but reality. I felt they were all relatable. A good, timely book.
- At Least We Hope So
Temple Grandin is such an inspiration, and she rides again in this book, edifying the masses on how animals thrive. (Here's a hint: often not the way we're doing things.) I always find her insight fascinating and memorable. If you love animals, pick this one up. Your dog might thank you.
- And She Has a Lot to Say
I loved Lauren on Gilmore Girls, but always thought she was awkward in interviews. After reading this book, I feel like I understand her, and like her so much. She'd be a great friend or co-worker, exactly because she's different from most celebrities. Just real enough, weird enough, and definitely imperfect. Makes me love her. She's a great writer, too!
- Kinda Washed Up
Wow--this promises a lot and the premise is intriguing. But I was frustrated by too many tangents that didn't go anywhere. Good writing, but focus, girl.
- This One'll Stay With You
So interesting! Who knew (not me, that's for sure) such a scenario could ever have existed? Soak up the mood, environment, wrongfulness and innocence.
- I Like the Effect it Had on Me
Aw . . . the follow-up to The Rosie Project is, in my opinion, just as good. How often does that happen? I look forward to Part III. A fun, sweet read.
- Dave Strikes Again
If you're a fan of Dave Barry, there's really no review needed. If you haven't encountered him yet, here's the deal. No thinking required--just read and enjoy!
- Great if Your Favorite Color is Blue
Well written but melancholy. To me, the overarching message is very much a la Crash (the movie) in that when someone seems to be the definition of horrible, they'll surprise you by doing something kind. And we all know the opposite can be true too. If you're not sure what the heck I mean, read away and Olive will demonstrate.
- It All Makes Sense Now
Loved it. Watching Andre play tennis in his "bad boy" era was part joy, part frustration. As a viewer, it always seemed as though the tantrums and drama were all part of the show. Apparently, not so much. There was a lot going on under his much talked-about hair. "Tiger Moms" get all the attention (and derision) but dads can be just as formidable. His story is fascinating, tragic, redemptive and sweet. Loved his candor, courage and forgiveness.
- Like Salted Caramel
This book takes you to unexpected places through the eyes of Lee, the girl obsessed with Laura Ingalls Wilder. Loved the writing, but I didn't always love the main character. Just like real life, I guess.
